[4K] Largest Hole in the World – Bingham Canyon Mine – 60 fps

A visit to the largest man-made hole in the world, the Bingham Canyon copper mine.

I made a few mistakes in my voice-over. The dump truck close up was actually of a 320 ton model, identifiable by the red lip on the front of the dump bed. Additionally the machine I thought was a 4100XPC was actually a 2800XPC, a slightly smaller model. The 4100XPC (#98) is up on the left side of the pit and there is a significant amount of footage of it in this video.

A lot of trucks sitting around doing nothing. Coffee is cheaper than diesel, park em up lads.

I saw a documentary about a copper mine in Africa where the dump trucks used a trolley system to make the uphill part of the journey. Electricity is obviously way cheaper than diesel, and the electric motors are also way more powerful, doing 24mph uphill compared to the 8mph that the diesel engine could

So I’m wondering, why doesn’t this mine use something similar? The uphill journey is very long here, using diesel to lift all of that rock seems very wasteful. Any idea if it has been considered?

I went there a few years ago. It was not open to visitors, so we hiked all the way to a peak to take a look at it.

Why is there no people outside the vehicles?

I remember looking down from the old visitors center, wondering why the group of little cars were painted yellow when I realized they were full size school buses.
The dump trucks are the size of a 2 story home.
