The Gobi’s Hidden Treasures: Asia’s Largest Desert

The Gobi desert can be above 40 degrees in summer and minus 40 degrees in winter – humans and animals depend on each other to survive.
Deserts are the most haunting of all the Earth’s landscapes. Sometimes we think of them as vast empty spaces that dwarf and test our human spirit. But that view is wrong in so many ways.
They are full of colour and contrast. There are mountains and lagoons among the dunes and plains. They often teem with life and are rich in resources. Their peoples have remarkable qualities of ingenuity and endurance, wisdom and humour – their festivals and gatherings full of colour and energy.

As an urban Mongol I watched this great documentary with mixed feelings: fascination and a deep frustration. It was nice and interesting to see herders living their everyday life and enjoying themselves and to see gorgeous animals and landscape.

But witnessing the consequences of the greed of a bunch of politicians in collaboration with foreign mining companies ruthlessly taking sacred nature to destruction within less than a 10 year period makes me angry. They won’t stop until the land and everything on and under it is completely ruined, will they?

It’s extremely sad that the life of the brave young biologist T. Lkhagvasumberel aka Sumberel, featured in the documentary was so abruptly and cruelly ended in hands of covetous capitalists and corrupt politicians. He was only 27 when was murdered in December 2015. Since then the authorities have been attempting to prove the obvious and unheard of before murder as a suicide. He was awarded "Helen Freeman Awards 2015" post-mortem. He had been chosen as one of the best researchers in action to save snow leopards.
I hope now he is in heaven enjoying the company of his beloved snow leopard for whom he sacrificed his young life.

The Sahara used to be green and it flourished with life. A lot of kingdoms there have disappeared.

FAKE PROPAGAND….. and the usual nasty one.! The Mongols has a lot more INVOMMEN WITH THE RUSSIAN MOST THE KAZAKHs but even others THAN WITH THE AMERICANS …
AMERICANS HAS THIS SOMEWHAT ANORMAL MANTRA THAT ONLY THEM AND THEM ALONE GIVE PROSPERITY by suck out the blood of other nation for gold and money.
HOW CAN A NATION WHO;S GOD S MONEY befrore the LIVING GOD bring prosperity, IT IS THE SWEET LIE OF THE SATAN WHO LOVES GOLD AND MONEY SLAVERY

Whatever the reason is for sticking that piece of wood into the poor camel’s nose, it’s a cruel custom. Animals feel pain too. I don’t know why people in wild places tend to think that animals are insensitive.

This doc. dealt not only w/ the life of reindeer nomads but also that of the mining for gold & copper, the extinction of the rare big cat, snow leopard & the revival of Mongolian buddhism & so on ( btw, I enjoyed the camel race,,,,where else can you see such race?! ). All in all, this is so amazing, engrossing & spellbinding that I’m in great awe of the people such as cameramen, sound men ( w/ background music ), the rest of the crew members & an editor including a producer in this superlative documentary regarding the current Mongolia. My highest commendation & kudos to all of them. From Japan,,,,,,(01/12/22, Wed. night here)

The young biologist had been killed, because he was against Mongolian companies who were licensed to dig and destroy the beautiful part of the Gobi including the territory of the snow leopards. Those companies mainly financed by the Chinese companies. He disappeared without a trace. He was from Northern Mongolia, which is called Khuvsgul, the 2nd freshwater lake in the world.

Although the countryside’s life is more harsh than city life. But I still prefer the countryside. The air is much cleaner & fresher than in the city. The countryside is also much quieter & peaceful. 😉😊

I wish whole Asia were good partnerships like Europe, so we could help other with resources. Look at when Australia had troubles with wildfire ,Europe and The US donate large amount of money and human resource to help them. I hope one day we understand that Asian are one people. Myself I see another Asian in Europe I see a brother… some Asian like Vietnamese or Chinese might not think the same.
