New Idria Quicksilver Mine part 1
New Idria Quicksilver Mine part 1
Trip out to the New Idria Quicksilver mine in the San Benito Badlands out by Hollister.
Music is Eternity & Infinity Are In These Hands by Yasuo Uragami from Gundam Wing.
Good quality, both content and video.
I live in hollister I drive thru there often on my way out to San Luis Obispo. Paicenes is pronounced Pie-See-Nis not Pay-Seens hehe
Fucking shit! You don’t have a huge mustache and a cowboy hat!
Worked at new idria mine inn 1969. Was a busy place then
@Influx27 check out his tresspasser lets play, I don’t recall which episode exactly but he does indeed say "we’ll leave the lights on for ya" and it does sound just as amazing!
Amazing work. Great tripod positioning for the talk with the old man. Informative and entertaining dialogue. Another quality vid by R.I. what do you expect?
PS: You need a hat, preferably Indiana Jones style to set off the whole package.
silent hill
I legitimately thought that guy was angry at you around 5:40…and, of course, lulz to 6:45. I still can’t believe you were able to hear me. Dad still doesn’t believe it could have worked at all, and for good reason I s’pose.
Wow, you look nothing like I imagined you would from your voice. That aside the production values of this; the graphics, music, editing, etc. are shockingly good. It’s very seldom I see stuff this good on YouTube.
Your voice… I bet documentaries sit at home and watch your videos. Goddamn.
Someone*
Gundam Wing music
Actually I have a canvas fedora like Indiana Jones’ but I didn’t wear it for this video. I should pull that out more often.
My dad worked The New Idria Mine from 1966 to 1973,I I lived there till I was four, brought back memories for my pop.
Absolutely right, we were being careful in the areas that showed rodents had been active. That dust was actually a sealed canvas bag from a case of soil samples in the vault to the left. Someone collected dozens of samples in the 80’s and just left them behind.
XD wtf time travlere place? u sound like u should be like 45 movie voice or something brotenkahmen but u look like dbag college bro it doesnt make since u dopplgangin homie?
I don’t understand, why did the old owners leave behind all that old furniture if some of it was worth something back when it was new?
That man was Kemp Woods, of Whimsy mine. I took care of him until he passed in 2018 😭 Kemp was an amazing man
We pronounce it New Eye-dra
Great job! Nice to see the man behind the voice.
As everyone has said before, if you are not already narrating, time to get out there and do some…super voice…some would say hot!. Anywho, about the public phone, as of 5/15/10 The public phone works!
Hell yes.
The guy who got the deed to the land after the mine closed used the place as a garbage dump for years. It was all ruined in some way or another.
Ah my bad
Wheres the video of you tagging ole lady in the clay brothel ten miles up the road? Bummer. Joking…. You cant get pu**y driving a minivan anyhow! lol
The ole guys name is kemp and he is a gem miner. He does not have a plan to clean the area up, but he does survive it. Lets see that documentary of Clear Creek Mgmgt area and how its being mismanaged! God damded BLM!
You should do more documentaries like this about hazardous sites
Well it is Youtube after all. Try the HD option in the corner.
This is professional.
Had me hooked from start to finish.
Mary is cute ^^
When I did the Trespasser LP I found out that a lot of people have trouble loading Viddler videos because of a dynamic resizing thing they do. Figured Youtube would be more compatible.
2:15 – ‘That sucks buddy’
Great videos (parts 1 & 2). Just a couple comments about the Hanta virus warnings their. When I went to New Idria I thought these warnings were BS. But apparently they have found mice with that disease in the area. What are your chances of catching it their? – probably extremely small. But you made me cringe when you started throwing dirt around in the building, that’s how it is normally contracted (from disturbing dust containing dried rodent urine). Hanta is lethal so it is a real risk .
A little while before watching your videos (1&2) I watched another video and thought something looked familiar about the rotary furnace you discussed…
Going back, it turns out the video I watched was actually a 1955 documentary on the exact mine you visited. It shows how the mercury is extracted and shows those furnaces in operation. Check the mine out in 1955:

PACINES LOL HOLY SHIT DUDE YOU SAID EVERYTHING SO WRONG.. ITS SO FUNNY
Can’t please everybody.
Man, this sure is the most awesome thing I have seen today. I had no idea something on Youtube could put much work into a random thing. You are the greatest Youtuber ever
@Research Indicates Hey I came across your videos of the New Idria Mines while doing some family research. My Grand Mother is going to be 100 in a few days, and grew up in Hollister. Her Great Grand Father was the Stage Proprietor between Hollister and New Idria in the 1860s & 1870s (could have even been earlier, I’m not certain). He later went on to be one of the first Sheriff’s of San Benito County. In the 1880’s her Grand Father was the Superintendent of the mines…he too became the Sheriff of San Benito County in 1898 to 1934.
Anyway, sorry to bother you with so much boring history. But I’ve heard of these stories of the New Idria Mines all my life, but have never been there.
Your videos were a lot of fun to watch, and I now have a much better idea of what it was like, so Thank You. Also, love your sense of humor, and the excellent editing! Scared me to death when I saw Mary walking on the board across the Acid Mine Drainage.
Thanks!
It’s like somebody combined Norm Macdonald with the most soothing voice on the planet.
awesome video. we we’re up there yesterday. the billiards table is now gone
You bet, I’m hoping to get one started by the end of summer after all my backpacking trips are done.
Awesome job bro!

Wonderful. Amazing. I’ve watched this video several times over now, and I still love it.
